The Southwestern Pennsylvania Area Agency on Aging, Inc. (Area Agency on
Aging) established in 1974 as a private, non-profit corporation is responsible
for the development and management of the overall service delivery system for
older adults in Fayette, Greene and Washington Counties. Part of a national
network of agencies established by the federal Older Americans Act, the Area
Agency on Aging is funded primarily through the Pennsylvania Department of
Aging. The Area Agency on Aging is an affiliate of Southwestern Pennsylvania
Human Services (SPHS), which is a non-profit management services agency.
The Area Agency on Aging subcontracts with thirty (30) local agencies to
provide a comprehensive service delivery system for older adults. Wherever
feasible, consumers are given the opportunity to choose among a variety of
qualified providers. The Area
Agency on Aging strongly supports the following guiding principles:
- ensuring quality service,
- increasing consumer choice, and
- providing a mechanism for cost containment.
While most services are provided through the development of subcontracts
others are provided directly by the Area Agency on Aging. The full range of
programs and services includes:
- advocacy
- home and community based services
- employment assistance
- health promotion
- information and referral
- legal assistance
- home-delivered meals
- protective services
- senior community centers
- adult day care
- transportation
- and more…
